27 Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ
The essential pre-booking checklist — pricing, backup gear, MC skills, contracts, and the red flags every couple should watch for.
Why this matters
Hire the Right DJ — Not the Cheapest
Your wedding DJ runs roughly 70% of your reception — music, announcements, timeline, and overall energy. A great DJ creates the day you'll remember. A bad one creates an awkward dinner and an empty dance floor.
These 27 questions, organized into 6 categories, are what we'd ask if we were hiring a DJ tomorrow. Steal them. Use them on every DJ you interview.
Money & paperwork first
Pricing & Contracts
QUESTION 1
What's included in your base price?
What to look for: Look for: DJ, MC, full setup, music planning. Watch for hidden add-ons later.
QUESTION 2
Are there any additional fees? (Travel, setup, overtime?)
What to look for: Reputable Cleveland-area DJs disclose all fees upfront. No surprises.
QUESTION 3
What is your overtime rate?
What to look for: Should be clearly stated in the contract — typically $150-$300/hour.
QUESTION 4
What's your deposit and payment schedule?
What to look for: Standard is 25-50% to book, balance due 14-30 days before.
QUESTION 5

What to look for: Walk away if they don't. A contract protects both sides.

Experience & Reviews
QUESTION 1
How many weddings have you personally DJ'd?

QUESTION 2
How long have you been in business?
What to look for: 5+ years is a strong signal of stability.
QUESTION 3
Can I read reviews on multiple platforms?
What to look for: Google, The Knot, WeddingWire, and Facebook — they should have reviews everywhere, not just one site.
QUESTION 4
Do you have references I can contact?
What to look for: Recent (last 12 months) couples should be willing to chat.
QUESTION 5
Have you worked at my venue before?
What to look for: Bonus if yes — they'll know the room, staff, and acoustics.
No backup = red flag
Equipment & Backup
QUESTION 1
What equipment do you use?
What to look for: Professional gear: powered speakers (QSC, JBL, RCF), pro mixer/controller, wireless mics.
QUESTION 2
Do you bring backup equipment?
What to look for: CRITICAL question. Should include backup laptop, mics, cables, and ideally speakers.
QUESTION 3
What happens if you get sick or have an emergency?
What to look for: They should have a network of backup DJs they trust.
QUESTION 4
Do you have liability insurance?
What to look for: Most Cleveland venues require it. Minimum $1M coverage is standard.
QUESTION 5
How much time do you need for setup and teardown?

MC Skills & Personality
QUESTION 1
Will you also act as MC?
What to look for: Yes for most full-service DJs — but confirm. Bad MC = awkward reception.

QUESTION 1

What to look for: A professional DJ has unlimited streaming + local backups of 50,000+ songs.
QUESTION 3
Can I provide a must-play and do-not-play list?
What to look for: Should be a YES — and they should provide a structured planning tool to capture it.
QUESTION 4
Will you play songs not in your library if I request them?
What to look for: Yes — they should be able to source nearly any song with notice.
QUESTION 5
How do you read the room and adjust music?
What to look for: Listen for specifics — "I watch the floor, I move from mid-tempo to peak energy as I see crowd response."
